1A: Psychological implications of freemium model methods in gaming applications
ABSTRACT
During the last decade, freemium monetization methods of microtransactions and loot boxes (simulated gambling) have become engrained into almost all the most popular games that are played by millions of people, with the gaming industry growing increasingly year by year there comes a concern of how these methods are affecting the ‘gamer’ population. The objective here is to provide an insight into the user behavior and psychological implications of monetized business models within gaming applications and does the model influence the users to spending real world currencies for in-game currencies, loot boxes and microtransactions and most importantly does this psychologically impact the user in a harmful way such as causing gambling addiction, gambling problems and gaming disorders.

ABSTRACT
Since the 1970s video games have grown to be one of the most popular entertainment past times, a majority of us have at least engaged with a game either on mobile or console, it was estimated that there was 2.7 billion ‘gamers’ within the year 2020 [1] and recently it has been a great help to many who had experienced COVID restrictions due to the SARS 19 (coronavirus) pandemic, increasing the aforementioned number to an estimated 2.81 billion active ‘gamers’ as of 2021 and seeing a further estimate of 3.07 billion by the end of 2023 [2]. With this ever-increasing popularity of games in our societies, we greatly praise the positivity of gaming applications has had on us, but we also must be ever so cautious and concerned about the negative effects that these gaming applications can also cause. The objective here is to provide an insight into psychological conditions such as, game addiction, gambling disorders (video games) and gaming disorders arising from the ‘gamer’ population and ultimately are these negative effects a great concern.
